Navigating daily life with type 2 diabetes can feel stressful, whether you’ve just received the diagnosis or have been living with it for years.

It can feel overwhelming to juggle doctor’s appointments, medications, and lifestyle changes. Maybe you’re caring for other people in your life, too.

Managing your blood sugar on top of everyday stress at work and home can make it difficult to stay grounded.

Sometimes, taking care of yourself can be the hardest thing of all.

Take care of your space

“I have my bedroom set up as a sanctuary where I am most of the time. I have a TV, stereo, books, journals, sketch pads, and my dog Cooper with me all the time.

Write in a gratitude journal

“Before starting a gratitude journal, I was in tears every night during the national news.

“The gratitude journal is an effective method to express your thoughts and feelings. It can also be helpful when trying to cope with anxiety.

“Expressive writing can help your physical and mental health.” — Robert L. Sharpley, retired teacher

Notice when and where you feel stressed

“Keeping track of additional information, such as the date and what you were doing at the time you were stressed, may help you determine specific triggers.

“For example, are you more stressed on Monday mornings? If so, you know now to take special steps on Monday mornings to lower your stress and keep your glucose in check.” — Mila, Bezzy T2D Community Guide

Practice deep breathing

“To manage stress, I started practicing 4-by-4 box breathing when first waking up and before going to bed. I also make it a practice to do this when I am walking outside, especially if I am going to a meeting.” — Cal90

“Try to practice deep breathing exercises and meditation. I know it’s easier said than done, but your health is dependent on you stressing less.

“If you have access to a counselor, it helps to have someone nonjudgmental to talk with and perhaps offer you some more coping skills to offset all the stress. Good luck, and don’t let the numbers get you down!” — anonymous

Invest in your hobbies

“I like to work on hobbies that make me feel empowered. Sometimes, I also read.

“I’m not sure why, but forcing myself to exercise or do meditation makes me feel stressed even if I feel good afterwards.” — Cari Fifield

“Having friends with the same conditions that I have provides me with not only support and encouragement but also stress relief.” — Karen Swanson, RN
